Slendertone belts and trainers are suitable for all adults, but some care is still needed. Don’t use our products if:
- You have electronic implants (like a pacemaker or defibrillator) or suffer from any heart problems.
- You are pregnant.
- You suffer from cancer or epilepsy.
- You are under medical supervision for cognitive dysfunction.
- You are connected to high-frequency surgical equipment.
Question: What does the sensation feel like?
Answer: When you increase the intensity, you’ll feel a mild pulsing sensation followed by a gradual tightening in the abdominal region. The muscles should contract smoothly, hold in that position for a few seconds and then gently relax again, like they would during regular ab exercises.
Question: Can electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) toning cause muscle soreness?
Answer: Like all exercise, some muscle soreness should be expected. Use a lower toning intensity if you’re experiencing excessive abdominal soreness.
Question: Why is my skin red after a session?
Answer: Some redness is natural during toning, so only wear the belt during a session. If the redness is excessive turn down the intensity, but if the problem persists contact our customer care team.
Question: The stimulation is uncomfortable. How can I enhance my comfort?
Answer: Ensure that your gel pads are positioned correctly and firmly pressed on the skin. You can also tighten the belt for a snugger fit. Pause your session before making any abs belt readjustments. Check the intensity too – you can always lower it to make it more comfortable.
Question: How do I know when I should replace the gel pads?
Answer: If the signal is weakening (even when the batteries are still OK), it usually means that the gel pads are wearing out. Adjust your abs belt to ensure correct, firm positioning.
If this fails, it may be time to replace your gel pads. Their adhesive, hydrogel properties deteriorate over time, so we recommend replacing them after 20-30 toning sessions.
Question: Why won't my fairly new gel pads stick to the belt?
Answer: Ensure that the patterned grid side of the gel pads is placed over the metal studs (with the black side on your skin) and that you’ve removed their plastic covers. Before and after each session, press the edges of each pad very firmly onto the belt.
Question: Can’t feel any stimulation from the middle pad?
Answer: If you just started using a Slendertone belt for the first time you are probably using it at a low intensity (under 30). It is quite normal that you would feel more stimulation at the side (oblique muscles) than in the middle (abdominal muscle) as we use our abdominal muscles every day and they are not as sensitive as the oblique muscles. You should select an intensity level which is comfortable but suitably challenging and continue to increase the intensity as you progress through your six-week programme to maximise your workout. As you increase the intensity you will start to feel the stimulation in your abdominal muscle.
Question: I can feel tingling in my legs during a toning session. What should I do?
Answer: This means that the gel pads are over your hip bones. Try moving the oval pads upwards and inwards (i.e. towards the centre of your body) to prevent this, but don’t forget to pause your toning session first.
Question: What’s the difference between Slendertone abs belts and other brands?
Answer: Slendertone's technology is exclusive, patented and clinically proven. We also offer the only EMS belt capable of exercising all the abdominal muscles: the rectus and transverses abdominis and internal/external obliques.
Question: Can I use the Abs5 after having a baby?
Answer: Yes! Please wait a minimum of 6 weeks after natural childbirth or 3 months after a caesarean section. Seek approval from your doctor first before beginning a toning programme.
Question: Can I use an Abs5 belt if I have a belly button piercing?
Answer: We advise taking out any naval (belly button) piercings before a toning session.
Question: Can I use my Slendertone abs belt during regular exercise?
Answer: Combining toning with your exercise routine can deliver even better results because your muscles are working harder. Walking, abs workouts and yoga and Pilates classes are recommended, while using an intensity that is slightly lower than what you’re used to. Try completing exercises like stomach crunches and sit-ups when you feel the EMS signals contracting your abs.
Question: Why are my stomach muscles getting exercised but not the waist muscles?
Answer: People come in all shapes and sizes and the gel pads positioning can be easily personalised for most body types. You can move the central gel pad slightly higher/lower than your belly button. There are 3 size indicators on the belt as well, to help you target specific ab and core muscles based on the location of the nerves.
You can move the two oval gel pads to accommodate different waist sizes. Move away from the central pad for larger waists, and closer for slimmer waists.
Question: What is the warranty period on my Abs5?
Answer: Your Abs5 comes with a two-year warranty on electronic parts. If a fault develops, view our troubleshooting section or please get in touch with our customer care team.
Question: What do I need to work the Slendertone Abs5?
Answer: You need the abs toning belt and controller, 3x AAA batteries, and one set of gel pads.
Setting up the belt
Question: How do I assemble my abs belt correctly?
Answer: Follow these steps to effectively tone your abs/core according to your personal body type:
1. Turn the belt over so that the silver studs inside the markers are facing up.
2. Take the three gel pads out of the bag. You have one square and two oval pads. All three have a grid pattern on one side (the other side is plain black).
3. Remove the three plastic covers from the patterned grid side and dispose.
The oval pads can be placed at different positions according to waist size. The markers closest to the centre pad are for waists 24-31 inches (61-79cm); the middle for waists 30-38 inches (76-97cm); and the outside markers for waists 37-46 inches (94-116cm).
4. Place the pads face down so that the pattern side covers the metal studs completely.
5. Turn the belt over and connect the controller by sliding it into the holster until it clicks into position.
6. Turn the belt back over to take the covers off the black side of the gel pads, exposing the adhesive gel. Save these to protect your gel pads after every toning session.
7. Position the belt over your waist with the square pad over your navel (belly button).
8. Press the front pad firmly onto the skin and stretch the belt around your waist. The oval pads should sit between your hip bones and ribcage.
9. Firmly fasten the belt. You want it to gently compress without causing discomfort.
Question: What happens when the gel pads aren’t placed grid-side down on the studs?
Answer: The grid side evenly distributes EMS signals from the studs. Incorrectly placing it results in ineffective toning and less comfortable sessions.
Question: What happens if I don’t take off the protective plastic covers?
Answer: The pads use a water-based, adhesive gel to send EMS signals into the abdominals, so they need to be removed. Keep these covers handy to protect your pads after every toning session.
Question: Can I move my abs belt or adjust the pad positioning?
Answer: You can, but the position we recommend is clinically proven to be the optimal placement to stimulate the nerves that work and tone your abs. Avoid positioning over the hip bones and ribs and DO NOT place near the heart.
Question: I’m ready to start toning! How do I control my Slendertone Abs5?
Answer: After setting up your belt, turn on the controller by pressing and holding the power button for 2 seconds. Press the arrows up with both your thumbs to begin increasing the intensity. This automatically starts the timer for your toning programme of choice.
To pause at any time, simply press the power button. Repeat to resume or stop, and hold it down to switch off.
We recommend that you tone while seated until you get used to the sensation of EMS contractions.
Question: What toning programmes does the Abs5 feature?
Answer: Slendertone Abs5 features 10 programmes: 8 core training (used with or without exercise) and 2 core movement (used with exercise).
Press the ‘P’ button to display all 10 programmes. You cannot change programmes during a session – switch your controller off first and then switch it on again.
Your Abs5 features ‘auto-progression’, which takes you through a clinically proven set of programme parameters to provide a stronger core from 4 weeks. Auto-progression begins at programme 1 – just follow the sessions as prompted on the screen.
Question: What ab crunch exercises can I use for programmes 9-10?
Answer: Before beginning programmes 9 or 10, lie on your back and bend your knees at 90°. Position both hands either side of your head. Your feet should be flat on the floor, shoulder width apart. Your abdominal muscles are fully relaxed. If you’re unfamiliar with abs workouts, start at programme 9.
Question: How can I increase the intensity of my session?
Answer: Press the arrows up with both thumbs to increase intensity. Select an intensity level that’s comfortable but challenging. We recommend increasing this gradually over your six-week toning programme to get the most out of your abs workouts.
Question: What toning intensity should I choose?
Answer: Everyone has their own personal preferences, so it’s impossible to recommend an intensity. Select an intensity that is comfortable but challenging and gradually increase throughout your toning programme (see table below). Everyone’s starting point is different so set your goals and adjust from there.
Question: How many toning sessions can I do in a day?
Answer: We recommend 2 sessions each day maximum, but your muscles tell you when they require rest and recovery. If you feel sore, stop for the day, rest and recover. It’s during the rest periods that your muscles grow stronger.
Question: How many toning sessions should I do in a week?
Answer: For the best results, try completing at least 4-5 toning sessions per week. You can do more or less, depending on your lifestyle/schedule and how fresh your abs feel after your last workout.
Question: Where can I view my toning session stats and history?
Answer: Your controller stores total number of sessions completed, maximum and average intensity, and, while active, your current intensity level. Press the ‘i’ button to view this info. This appears and then reverts back to the session timer after a few seconds.
Question: How do I change my toning programme?
Answer: You can change programmes at any time, but you will be starting from scratch. You do not lose your overall sessions history, but you will need to start from programme 1. Simply press the ‘P’ button at any time to change toning programmes before you begin your next session.
Question: What happens if the batteries die during a session?
Answer: Replace them immediately. You will need to start your toning session again, though. Shop now for disposable and rechargeable AAA batteries.
Question: Why am I getting an ‘ERR’ message on my display screen?
Answer: If you’re experiencing an error sign, check out our troubleshooting section.
