General advice

Slendertone products are suitable for all adults but care is still needed. Do not use Slendertone if:

  • You have an electronic implant (such as a pacemaker or defibrillator) or suffer from any heart problems.
  • You’re pregnant.
  • You suffer from cancer or epilepsy, or are under medical supervision for cognitive dysfunction.
  • You’re connected to high-frequency surgical equipment.

Question: What does the sensation feel like?

Answer: When you begin to increase the intensity, you’ll feel a mild pulsing sensation followed by a gradual tightening in the abs.

The muscles should contract smoothly, hold for a few seconds and then gently relax again, like they would during stomach crunches or sit-ups.

Question: Does electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) cause muscle soreness?

Answer: Like all exercise, some muscle soreness can be expected. Use a lower toning intensity if you are experiencing excessive soreness.

Question: Why is my skin red after a session?

Answer: Some redness is natural. It is partly due to increased blood flow and should fade soon after. It can also occur due to the pressure of your belt.

Only wear the belt during a session. If the redness is excessive, try turning down the intensity. If the problem persists, contact our customer care team. [LINK]

Question: The stimulation is uncomfortable – how can I boost comfort?

Answer: Ensure that the gel pads are correctly positioned and pressed firmly on the skin. Tighten the belt for a snug fit (remember to pause your session before repositioning the belt).

Check the intensity too. If it’s too high, reduce the stimulation so that it’s more comfortable.

Question: How do I know when I should replace the gel pads?

Answer: If the signal is weakening (even when the batteries are still OK), it usually indicates that the gel pads are wearing out. Check this by adjusting your abs belt to ensure correct, firm positioning.

if this fails, it may be time to get new pads. Their adhesive, water-based composition deteriorates over time, so we advise replacing them every 20-30 toning sessions.

Question: Why won't the pads stick to the belt (even though they’re fairly new)?

Answer: Ensure that the patterned side of the pads is placed over the metal studs (with the black side on your skin). Check that you’ve removed the plastic covers too before applying the pads.

Before and after each session, you should also press the edges of each pad very firmly onto the belt.

Question: Can’t feel any stimulation from the middle pad?

Answer: If you just started using a Slendertone belt for the first time you are probably using it at a low intensity (under 30). It is quite normal that you would feel more stimulation at the side (oblique muscles) than in the middle (abdominal muscle) as we use our abdominal muscles every day and they are not as sensitive as the oblique muscles. You should select an intensity level which is comfortable but suitably challenging and continue to increase the intensity as you progress through your six-week programme to maximise your workout. As you increase the intensity you will start to feel the stimulation in your abdominal muscle.

Question: I can feel a tingling in my legs during toning. What should I do?

Answer: This means that the pads are over your hip bones. Moving the oval pads upwards and inwards (i.e. towards the center of your body) should prevent this. Remember to pause or stop your session before making any adjustments.

Question: What is the difference between our belts and other brands?

Answer: Slendertone's EMS technology and the placement of our pads are clinically proven so that we can ensure the highest levels of toning effectiveness and comfort.

Answer: Yes. Our specialised post-natal program is great for firming up tummy muscles after pregnancy. Please wait a minimum of 6 weeks after natural childbirth or 3 months after a caesarean. Seek approval from your doctor before use.

Question: Can I use an Abs7 belt if I have a belly button piercing?

Answer: We advise taking out your belly button piercing before toning.

Question: Can I use my Slendertone belt during exercise?

Answer: Combining toning with exercise is likely to deliver even better results as your muscles are working harder. Gentle exercise like walking or Pilates while using an intensity that is slightly lower than what you’re used to is advised. Try completing exercises like sit-ups when you feel the EMS stimulation contracting your abs.

Question: Why are my stomach muscles getting exercised but not my waist muscles?

Answer: People come in all shapes and sizes and the pads positioning can be easily customised for your body type.

You can move the central gel pad slightly higher or lower than your naval. There are 3 size indicators on the belt too, to help you target specific muscles based on the location of the nerves.

You can move the two side oval pads to accommodate different sizes. For larger waists, move away from the center pad and closer for slimmer waists.

Question: What is the warranty period on my product?

Answer: Your Slendertone comes with a two-year warranty on electronic parts. If a fault develops, view our troubleshooting section or get in touch directly.

Getting started

Question: How long does the battery take to charge?

Answer: The controller should have enough power to complete one session, but we advise fully charging the battery before use. This takes a minimum of 3 hours and should last for 5 sessions. When your power is getting low, the battery icon will flash.

Question: What do I need to work the Slendertone Abs7?

Answer: You need the abs toning belt, handheld controller and charger, and one set of gel pads.

Setting up the belt

Question: How do I assemble the belt correctly?

Answer: Follow these steps to tone effectively according to your personal body type:

1. Turn the belt over so that the silver studs inside the markers are facing up.

2. Take the three gel pads out of the bag. You have one square pad and two oval pads. On all three, one side has a grid pattern and the other is plain black.

3. Remove the three protective plastic covers from the patterned side and dispose.

The oval pads can be placed at different positions according to your waist size. Choose the markers closest to the central pad for waists 24-31 inches (61-79cm); middle markers for 30-38 inches (76-97cm); and the outside markers for 37-42 inches (94-106cm).

4. Place the pads face down so that the pattern is on the metal studs, ensuring that the entire stud is covered.

5. Take off the protective plastic covers off the black side of the gel pads to expose the adhesive gel. Save these to protect your gel pads after sessions.

6. Position the belt over your waist, ensuring that the square pad is over your navel (belly button).

7. Press firmly onto the skin and stretch the belt around your waist. Ensure that the oval pads sit between your hips and ribs.

8. Firmly fasten the belt so that it compresses without causing discomfort.

9. Connect the controller by pushing together until you hear the ‘click’. Ensure that the pin connector is the correct way around – don’t force it in!

Question: What happens if the pads aren’t placed grid-side down on the studs?

Answer: The grid side evenly distributes the EMS signal from the metal studs. Incorrectly placing it results in less effective signal delivery and a lower training intensity tolerance.

Question: What happens if I don’t take off the plastic covers?

Answer: The pads use a water-based, adhesive gel that sends the EMS signals into the muscles – this isn’t possible with the covers blocking the signals. Keep these covers to protect your pads after each toning session.

Question: What if I wanted to move the belt or pads?

Answer: You can, but the position we advise has been clinically proven to be the optimal placement to stimulate the nerves that activate your abs. Avoid positioning over the hips and ribs and DO NOT place near the heart.


Question: I’m ready to start toning. How do I control my Slendertone Abs7?

Answer: After setting up your belt, turn on the controller by pressing and holding the power button for 2 seconds. Press the intensity arrows up with both your thumbs to begin increasing the intensity.

This automatically starts the countdown timer of the program you selected. You can pause this at any time by pressing the power button. Press it again to resume/stop or hold down to switch off.

Question: What toning programs does the Abs7 feature?

Answer: Slendertone Abs7 features 10 programs: 7 core training (used with or without exercise) and 3 core movement (used with exercise).

Press the ‘P’ button to display the programs. You cannot change programs during a session, you must first switch off your controller and then switch it on again.

Your Abs7 features ‘auto-progression’ which takes you through a clinically proven set of program parameters to deliver a stronger core from four weeks. Auto-progress starts at program 1. Simply follow the sessions as prompted on the screen.

Question: How can I increase the intensity?

Answer: Press the up arrows with both your thumbs to increase the intensity. Select a level which is comfortable but suitably challenging. Increase the intensity as you progress through your six-week program to maximize your workout.

Question: What intensity should I choose?

Answer: Each person has their own preferences, so a definitive intensity does not exist. Select an intensity that is comfortable but still challenging, gradually increasing the intensity during each session.

Question: How many sessions can I do in a day?

Answer: We recommend a max of 2 sessions per day. If you feel sore, stop for the day to rest and recover. It’s during these rest periods that your muscles are growing stronger.

Question: How many sessions should I do in a week?

Answer: For the best results try to complete at least 4-5 toning sessions each week. You can do more or less sessions, depending on your lifestyle and how fresh your muscles feel after your last workout.

Question: Where can I view my toning progress?

Answer: The controller stores total number of sessions completed, maximum intensity reached, average intensity and, while active, your current intensity level. Press the ‘i’ button to view this information. This will appear and revert back to the countdown timer after a few seconds.

Question: How do I change my toning program?

Answer: You can change programs at any time, but you will be starting all over again. You do not lose your overall sessions history, but you will have to start from program 1 again if you wish to restart. Simply press the ‘P’ button at any time to change programs before any toning session.

Question: What if my battery dies during a session?

Answer: Recharge the controller. Always try to recharge when you only have 33% power remaining.
