Whether you’re a dedicated athlete, getting back into shape or pursuing a healthier, holistic lifestyle, our global team is committed to helping you run further, jump higher, sit straighter and look and feel amazing. This has been our mission for more than 50 years, having sold 7,000,000+ toning devices all over the world.
Slendertone’s story began in the early 1960s, where we opened our very first offices on Baker Street, London, originally operating under ‘Medical Biological Instruments’.
Previously, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology was used solely in the medical industry to repair and rehabilitate damaged muscles. Slendertone recognised that everybody could benefit from EMS technology to look incredible and feel stronger, fitter, faster and happier in their everyday lives.
Our first toning device, the Slendertone Elite, could deliver almost 1,000 muscle contractions in a 30-minute session. While our EMS tech was unique and revolutionary our designs still needed a little bit of work. The ‘lightweight’ Elite, for example, weighed 5 pounds and 11 ounces (2.58kg). The Connect abs belt, in comparison, weighs under half a pound (6.8 ounces, to be precise).
The evolution of our products over the next six decades, though, is only one side of the story.
We soon began to increase our appeal, assisting world-class athletes as well as those aspiring to lead happier, healthier lifestyles.
‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali toned-up before his legendary boxing bouts with ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier; the Medical Advisory Council to the Olympics Committee picked us to support its athletes during the 1972 and 1976 Summer Games; we even supplied toners for the squads in the 1974 World Cup Final.
Not everyone can say that they’ve been part of history in the ring, on the pitch and even the Olympic podium.
We’re proud to be pioneers in our industry, so we always like to be the first when it comes to quality and innovation.
In 1999, Slendertone released the Flex belt range in Europe, the world’s first wearable abs toner that you could use in your own home. We then brought our personalised devices inside American homes, becoming the first FDA-cleared medical device in 2001.
We have always believed and known that our toning products are better than all of our competitors. In 2005 we decided to prove it, becoming the very first muscle toner to proudly publish the results of independent clinical trials conducted on our products. We published more clinically-proven evidence in 2006 and 2009 as well (just for good measure).
Our latest abs belt, Slendertone Connect, is the world’s first app-controlled toning device and second ever app-controlled medical device too.
We spent over 25,000 hours researching and developing Connect (not including the app itself) but all that hard work was worth it.
Whether it’s from inside the labs of our headquarters in Galway, Ireland, or our offices in Hong Kong, London, Paris and New Jersey, we are always looking for ways to innovate and improve every product.
This includes extensively testing the durability of our fabrics and electronics – the Connect controller can withstand 25kg of pressure, impacts of 500g from 1.3m and temperatures ranging from -25-70°C – as well as discovering new materials and methods which enhance the eco-credentials of our range.
We’ve even conducted research with the European Space Agency (ESA) on using our EMS technology to keep astronauts fit during multi-month zero gravity missions.
We have some other exciting projects in the pipeline too – but we can’t tell you about those just yet.
